The security function earns its organisational standing not through the threats it describes but through the value it demonstrably delivers to the people and interests it serves.
Why This Tenet Matters #
The pressure on security functions to justify their existence in tangible business terms has never been greater. In an environment shaped by economic constraint, competing organisational priorities, and boards that are increasingly sophisticated in their expectations of the security function, the ISO who cannot articulate and demonstrate the value their programme delivers will struggle to secure the investment, influence, and organisational support they need to be effective. Stakeholder value in this context is not a soft concept. It encompasses financial protection, reputational preservation, operational continuity, regulatory credibility, and the enablement of business opportunities that a strong security posture makes possible. Delivering this value consistently, and communicating it in terms that resonate with the diverse stakeholders who depend on it, is one of the most important and least technically demanding responsibilities the ISO carries.
Core Concepts #
Value in the Context of Security #
Security value is multidimensional and often counterintuitive. Much of what the security function delivers is invisible when it works well: the breach that did not happen, the regulatory fine that was avoided, the transaction that completed without compromise, the customer whose data was protected without their ever knowing it was at risk. This invisibility creates a persistent communication challenge for ISOs, who must find ways to make the value of prevention and resilience tangible to stakeholders who are more naturally alert to visible failures than to quiet successes.
Value also has a financial dimension that ISOs increasingly need to engage with directly. Delivering greater security with fewer resources, maximising the return on existing security investments, and actively supporting business opportunities that are enabled or differentiated by a strong security posture are all expressions of security value that translate directly into the financial and commercial terms that boards and executive teams understand and respond to.
