Security is not a destination that can be reached and held; it is a discipline that must be practised, tested, and refined without pause.
Why This Tenet Matters #
Of all the misconceptions that undermine security programmes, perhaps the most damaging is the idea that security can be finished. Vulnerabilities are discovered daily, threats evolve continuously, personnel become complacent, and the workarounds that individuals quietly develop without regard for consequences create new points of attack that no initial design anticipated. Security is unique among organisational disciplines in that its failures can be catastrophic, its successes are largely invisible, and the measures used to assess it are predominantly indirect. These characteristics make continuous improvement not merely a best practice but a survival imperative. Organisations that treat security as a project to be completed will always find themselves behind the adversaries who never stop evolving.
Core Concepts #
Security as a Process and an Attitude #
The foundational insight of this tenet is that security is a process and an attitude, not a state. Trust, in this context, is always limited and always time-bounded. Unverified trust decays. Personnel and systems that were trustworthy yesterday may be compromised today, and the weakest points in any system are constantly shifting as controls mature, behaviours change, and threat actors adapt their approach. The security mindset that this tenet demands can be summarised in a few enduring principles: compartmentalise to minimise what must be defended; defend in depth because no single line of defence is ever sufficient; re-verify the basis for trust regularly and unpredictably; and assume that some personnel and equipment are already compromised, because operating on that assumption produces more resilient security architectures than assuming they are not.
