Security professionals operate in a technically complex domain, but the stakeholders who depend on security communication to make governance decisions, allocate resources, and manage risk come from across the organisation and bring widely varying levels of technical familiarity. The security team that communicates clearly and consistently with all of these audiences converts its technical expertise into organisational value. The team that communicates primarily for an audience of fellow practitioners, using the language and framing that make sense within the security function, consistently fails to produce the understanding and the action that effective governance requires.
Clarity and consistency are distinct but complementary principles. Clarity ensures that each communication is understood by its intended audience. Consistency ensures that communications build cumulatively on each other, developing the shared understanding and the comparative reference points that stakeholders need to track performance over time and make sound risk-informed decisions.
Communicating Clearly Across Technical and Non-Technical Audiences #
The most common communication failure in security reporting is assuming that the technical description of a finding is itself a complete communication. It is not. The description of the vulnerability, the malware variant, or the attack technique tells the technical audience what happened. The non-technical audience needs to understand what it means: what the potential consequence is, what the organisation is doing about it, and what decision or action is required of them.
Focusing on business impact means translating every significant finding into its consequence for the organisation’s operations, finances, reputation, or regulatory position. A zero-day vulnerability being actively exploited in the organisation’s sector becomes more meaningful to a board member when it is described as a recently discovered security weakness that attackers are using to gain unauthorised access to organisations similar to this one, rather than through its technical CVE designation. The framing does not lose accuracy; it adds the context that makes the finding actionable for an audience that cannot independently assess the technical description’s significance.
