The Vulnerability Management Service represents the SOC’s most direct contribution to the preventive dimension of the security operations mission. It addresses security weaknesses in the organisation’s systems, applications, and networks before adversarial exploitation converts a known vulnerability into a confirmed incident. The governance relationship between vulnerability management and the broader SOC reflects the fundamental security principle that prevention consistently and substantially undercuts the cost of response, and that a SOC whose capability is exclusively reactive has accepted preventable exposure as the operational baseline.
The service’s governance must reflect its cross-departmental character. Successful operation requires collaboration between the SOC’s threat intelligence, the IT operations team’s patching capability, application owners’ code remediation authority, and the risk management function’s exception governance. The SOC does not own remediation, which remains the responsibility of the system owner, the application developer, and the infrastructure team whose technical control enables the fix. The SOC owns the vulnerability’s identification, the prioritisation intelligence the remediation decision demands, the remediation coordination ensuring the fix occurs within the risk-based timeline, and the validation confirming that remediation is complete and effective.
Vulnerability Scanning and Assessment #
Automated Scanning #
The regular scanning programme must address the full technology estate. Scheduled automated scans cover network infrastructure configuration vulnerabilities, endpoint software patch status, server hardening standards, cloud resource misconfigurations, and application code vulnerabilities together forming the vulnerability population the programme must continuously identify and track.
Authenticated scans using valid credentials access the target system’s detailed configuration, creating the deeper vulnerability identification that unauthenticated external perspective cannot achieve for configuration weaknesses, patch status, and software inventory. Unauthenticated scans mirror the adversary’s reconnaissance view. Together these create the comprehensive vulnerability picture that neither perspective alone delivers with the same completeness.
