The Incident Response Service represents the SOC’s operational commitment to managing security incidents with the speed, thoroughness, and governance discipline that the business consequences of an uncontrolled incident demand as the minimum acceptable response standard. Where the Threat Intelligence Service provides the intelligence informing the SOC’s anticipatory defence and the Threat Monitoring and Detection Service provides the capability to identify threats materialising in the environment, the Incident Response Service provides the structured mechanism that converts the detection event into the governed response whose quality determines the incident’s ultimate business impact. A SOC whose detection capability is excellent but whose incident response is ad hoc, inconsistent, or poorly documented will consistently find the adversary’s damage extending beyond the point that the detection’s timeliness would have enabled a well-governed response to contain.
The governance of the Incident Response Service must reflect the dual performance standard that every significant security incident simultaneously creates. The technical performance standard measures containment speed, eradication completeness, and recovery thoroughness as operational effectiveness indicators. The governance performance standard measures documentation quality, regulatory notification compliance, and chain of custody integrity as legal and compliance effectiveness indicators. A response that achieves the technical standard without the governance standard has contained the immediate threat while creating the residual regulatory, legal, and reputational liabilities that achieving the governance standard prevents.
Core Sub-Services #
Incident Management #
Incident Management provides the centralised governance function that coordinates end-to-end incident handling through the SOC’s service desk, creating the single authoritative record for every security incident from initial detection to final closure.
Ticket creation and management ensures every significant security event receives an immediate incident record that information enrichment, activity tracking, and mitigation review subsequently develop into complete incident documentation. A ticket capturing the detection timestamp, initial severity classification, assigned analyst, and preliminary scope assessment creates the first governance record whose accuracy the subsequent investigation confirms or refines.
