Moving Beyond True and False Positives #
The binary classification of alerts as true positives or false positives is a starting point, not an endpoint. It answers one question, was this a real threat or not, but it does not answer the more operationally useful questions of why the alert fired, what the underlying cause was, and what should change as a result. A SOC that closes every false positive without examining its root cause is treating the symptom while leaving the cause in place. The same misconfiguration, the same stale threat intelligence indicator, or the same undeclared administrative activity will generate the same alert again tomorrow.
The alternative is a structured set of resolution categories that captures not just the outcome of the triage decision but the reason behind it. Every closed incident becomes a data point that feeds back into the detection programme, the process improvement cycle, and the cross-functional communication that the SOC depends on to operate effectively.
