MITRE ATT&CK: The Adversarial Knowledge Framework #
The MITRE ATT&CK framework is the most comprehensive and operationally influential adversarial knowledge base available to the security community, providing the standardised taxonomy of adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures whose common vocabulary the threat intelligence, the detection engineering, the incident response, and the red team functions require as the shared reference standard for discussing and addressing the adversary’s behaviour with the precision that the security programme’s operational effectiveness demands. Maintained by the non-profit MITRE Corporation and continuously updated from the real-world observations of adversary behaviour that the global security community contributes as the living intelligence base, ATT&CK represents the accumulated operational intelligence of the security industry translated into the structured, searchable, and actionable framework whose governance value the SOC’s daily operational activities continuously draw upon.
The framework’s distinctive contribution to the SOC’s operational capability is the granularity and the real-world grounding whose combination the alternative models cannot match for the specific detection requirement, the specific hunting hypothesis, and the specific incident investigation whose quality the technique-level characterisation directly improves. Where the Cyber Kill Chain describes the reconnaissance stage as the high-level phase within the attack progression, ATT&CK describes the specific techniques the adversary employs during that phase, the sub-techniques whose variation reflects the specific tool, the specific operating system, and the specific operational constraint the adversary is addressing, and the procedures whose documentation captures how the specific threat actor groups have implemented these techniques in the confirmed real-world campaigns. This depth transforms the abstract security concept into the operational intelligence that the detection rule, the hunting query, and the response playbook can directly apply.
