The physical security of the organisation’s infrastructure represents the foundational layer of the defence in depth architecture that no amount of logical security investment can compensate for when it is absent or inadequate. The most sophisticated network security architecture, the most comprehensive endpoint protection, and the most rigorous access management programme are rendered ineffective when the adversary who gains physical access to the server room can remove the storage device, attach the hardware keylogger, or connect the rogue device to the internal network without the physical security controls that the facility’s protection requires. The Security Consulting function must govern the physical infrastructure security advisory with the recognition that the logical security architecture and the physical security architecture are not alternative approaches to the same security problem but complementary layers of the same defence in depth strategy whose combined integrity the overall security posture depends upon.
Physical infrastructure security is frequently governed through the facilities management function rather than the information security programme, creating the organisational separation that produces the security gap between the two domains whose integration the Security Consulting function’s advisory must address. The facilities team that governs the building’s physical access controls without the security programme’s input on the server room’s specific access requirements, and the security programme that governs the logical access architecture without the facilities team’s input on the physical access patterns that the logical access governance has not considered, together create the boundary conditions that the adversary’s physical attack vector exploits between the two governance frameworks whose integration the Security Consulting function must advocate as the physical-logical security alignment that genuine protection requires.
